We are looking for a skilled software engineering manager with proven leadership experience in a product-led environment.

The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, preferably from being a former software engineer themselves. Although you are not expected to be 'hands on' writing code in this role, you will use your technical knowledge to impart wisdom and guidance, review code and to ensure sound design decisions. Working collaboratively across the department, with product managers and the business to influence outcomes, you will use your expertise to lead a cross-functional engineering team, enabling the delivery of solutions to create value and to drive the efficiency and performance of our business.

This role will manage between 5-12 engineers (with varying levels of experience) across multiple disciplines. Technology stack varies across teams, but at Yell we use Java, Node.js, Vue.js, Kotlin, Swift, SAP technologies and more.

Responsibilities as Engineering Manager:

Overall accountability for delivering initiatives and driving the right technology choices.
Work closely with Scrum Master/Agile coaches in regular feedback sessions to reflect on the team’s progress, discuss challenges, explore opportunities to improve & optimize team performance and drive strategies to overcome obstacles hindering the team, whether they are technical challenges, team dynamics or organizational processes.
Accountable for predictable delivery and high quality outcomes of your team and will measure success for your team through the frequent delivery of high quality code to production and fast pace of delivery
Work with Product counterparts to fully understand and to deliver the roadmap and to champion the appropriate prioritization of technical improvement/debt items.
Using your technical background, you will understand the codebase & services your team work on and how they fit into the wider Yell picture. You will challenge decisions when they don’t seem right and facilitate technical decisions your team has to make, to ensure that well-designed, high-quality solutions are built first time.
Line management of cross-functional technical team members.
Build trust and a strong relationship with your team so that honest feedback is given & received in the right manner.
Help to facilitate the communication of Yell’s strategic vision to our engineers.
Work with peers across the wider Technology department to foresee & manage dependencies across teams.
Champion building and improving our engineering culture, the adoption and improvement of modern, agile software development practices within your team and create and environment where your team can thrive.

Skills we would like you to have :

Strong demonstrable people management experience
Prior experience in a hands-on technical role
Record of developing and delivering large scale, distributed or complex scale platforms
Excellent communication skills
Ability to prioritise and focus to manage multiple deliveries in different areas
Experience managing remote workers/teams
Computer Science or Engineering/Science/Technical degree- Preferred but not essential

This is a Hybrid role with a couple of days based our Reading Office a month but we can be flexible on this.
