Responsibilities as a Senior Front End Engineer:

Join a multi-disciplined team providing much needed front-end experience, building solutions mainly using Vue alongside webpack, NodeJS, SASS, Jest, and Cypress
Be involved in solutions from problem discovery through to delivery and continued evaluation.
Play a key role in our evolving Design System.
Share your experience/knowledge/interests with our other front-end engineers through participation in our guild.
Contribute to wider product and engineering workshops as we continually strive to make improvements to our practices

Skills we would like you to have :

Experienced engineer with a passion for front-end development that has worked in a product-led and agile environment, identifying, and developing solutions to address real customer problems.
In-depth understanding of JavaScript, CSS, and HTML based on proven commercial experience and have knowledge of how to develop high performance, accessible, and SEO friendly front-ends.
Customer Centric, providing highly valued quality products that are easy to use.Use engineer solutions that keep their data safe and protect the services they rely on from malicious attack.
Strong analytic and problem-solving skills and know how to build solutions that provide insightful data for both the growth and support of your systems.
Comfortable working in an empowered team. You believe in the team ethos of succeeding, or failing, as one. You are happy to ‘get stuck in’ and do what’s needed to deliver on the goals you have committed to as a team.
A keen eye for identifying delivery efficiency savings, you understand what good looks like, having experience of practices such as TDD, test automation, and CI/CD. You are keen to work with your team to improve ways of working, helping to increase throughput.
A passion for knowledge to allow you keep up to date with front-end technologies and the latest trends in your field and enjoy the opportunity to explore and bring ideas to your teams and the wider engineering community for consideration.

We are currently evaluating the use of Flutter for part of our digital solution and so any experience in this area would be advantageous.

This is a Hybrid role with a couple of days based our Reading Office a month but we can be flexible on this.

Software Engineering Manager

We are looking for a skilled software engineering manager with proven leadership experience in a product-led environment.

The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, preferably from being a former software engineer themselves. Although you are not expected to be 'hands on' writing code in this role, you will use your technical knowledge to impart wisdom and guidance, review code and to ensure sound design decisions. Working collaboratively across the department, with product managers and the business to influence outcomes, you will use your expertise to lead a cross-functional engineering team, enabling the delivery of solutions to create value and to drive the efficiency and performance of our business.

This role will manage between 5-12 engineers (with varying levels of experience) across multiple disciplines. Technology stack varies across teams, but at Yell we use Java, Node.js, Vue.js, Kotlin, Swift, SAP technologies and more.

Responsibilities as Engineering Manager:

Overall accountability for delivering initiatives and driving the right technology choices.
Work closely with Scrum Master/Agile coaches in regular feedback sessions to reflect on the team’s progress, discuss challenges, explore opportunities to improve & optimize team performance and drive strategies to overcome obstacles hindering the team, whether they are technical challenges, team dynamics or organizational processes.
Accountable for predictable delivery and high quality outcomes of your team and will measure success for your team through the frequent delivery of high quality code to production and fast pace of delivery
Work with Product counterparts to fully understand and to deliver the roadmap and to champion the appropriate prioritization of technical improvement/debt items.
Using your technical background, you will understand the codebase & services your team work on and how they fit into the wider Yell picture. You will challenge decisions when they don’t seem right and facilitate technical decisions your team has to make, to ensure that well-designed, high-quality solutions are built first time.
Line management of cross-functional technical team members.
Build trust and a strong relationship with your team so that honest feedback is given & received in the right manner.
Help to facilitate the communication of Yell’s strategic vision to our engineers.
Work with peers across the wider Technology department to foresee & manage dependencies across teams.
Champion building and improving our engineering culture, the adoption and improvement of modern, agile software development practices within your team and create and environment where your team can thrive.

Skills we would like you to have :

Strong demonstrable people management experience
Prior experience in a hands-on technical role
Record of developing and delivering large scale, distributed or complex scale platforms
Excellent communication skills
Ability to prioritise and focus to manage multiple deliveries in different areas
Experience managing remote workers/teams
Computer Science or Engineering/Science/Technical degree- Preferred but not essential
